J. Morgan Puett
[artist's website]

J. Morgan Puett (born in Hahira, Georgia 1957.) An artist/designer currently living and working in the country in Pennsylvania. Negotiating the territories between fashion, architecture and fine art , Morgan attempts to build a bridge to the past and salvage valuable aspects of it for the purpose for revitalizing the present. This is not unique to fashion or architecture; however, rarely is it analyzed through the functions of a small fashion business as an art project in New York City (1989-2001).

Her development as a clothing and environment designer arose out of a frustration with the limitations she experienced in the art world as an artist. "I have been interested in a method of cultural production that was more a form of public expression; something that could exist in the everyday rather than being a rarefied field of experience, over-coded by conditions of exclusion." While drawn to the conceptually and materially complex field of installation art, she felt it was marred by its condition of reception. In fashion design projects and architectural projects, Morgan has been able to apply the conceptual tool box of fine art to a more accessible and public sphere. Her recent projects have included Wave Hill (2002) and American Fine Arts (2003) In New York City; The Fabric Workshop and Museum In Philadelphia, Pa. (presently); Spoleto, USA, in Charleston, SC (2002);The Serpentine/Victoria and Albert Museum in London (2001); and currently in project with Mass Moca in North Adams, Mass.(2004); and also, Abbington Art Center in Philadelphia (2004).
